Mr. John A. Shuler
DEPUTY ADJUTANT GENERAL FOR STATE OPERATIONS
John A. Shuler is employed by the Office of the Adjutant General and serves as Deputy
Adjutant General for State Operations. In this position, he is responsible for executive
oversight of the South Carolina State Guard, Emergency Management Division, the
SCARNG Facility Programs, National Guard Youth Programs, and all other state programs that support the Military Department of South Carolina.
He was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and is a graduate of Bowman High School
and the University of South Carolina.
John Shuler enlisted as a teenager in the South Carolina Army National Guard in
1956 and served 5 years before his acceptance in the South Carolina Army National
Guard’s Palmetto Military Academy. Upon graduation in 1962, he was commissioned
a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard where he served as a traditional
Guard member and on active duty with the Army. He has served in various positions
of increasing responsibility and retired at the rank of Colonel.
His military education includes: Transportation and Quartermaster Officer Basic
Courses, Ordnance and Quartermaster Officer Advanced Courses, and Command and General
Staff College.

He is married to the former Phyllis Bowman, and they have a son, daughter, and four
